AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn quarterback and former Buford standout Ashton Daniels will sit out against Mercer to preserve a year of eligibility. Interim coach D.J. Durkin says Jackson Arnold and freshman Deuce Knight will play against the Bears, but he did not name a starter. Daniels is a senior transfer from Stanford. He has suited up three times for the Tigers this season and can only play in one more game to redshirt and retain another year of eligibility. With Auburn finishing at home against No. 10 Alabama, Durkin opted to keep Daniels off the field until the rivalry known as the Iron Bowl.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Felix Okpara had 20 points and eight rebounds, Nate Ament added 19 points and 10 boards, and No. 20 Tennessee cruised to a 91-66 victory over Rice despite an injury to forward J.P. Estrella. The 6-foot-11 redshirt sophomore went down in a scrum of bodies in the first half and appeared to hurt his left knee. Estrella entered averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game this season. He missed most of last season with a foot injury. Ja’Kobi Gillespie finished with 17 points and eight assists for the Volunteers, who improved to 4-0. Ethan Berg scored 11. Nick Anderson led the Owls with 19 points.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Flau’jae Johnson scored 22 points and MiLaysia Fulwiley had 20 points and six assists as No. 5 LSU extended its season-opening winning streak to five games with a 101-71 victory over Tulane. Mikaylah Williams added 16 points, Zakiya Johnson had 14 and Amiya Joiner 12 as the Tigers matched the school record with their fifth straight 100-point game, matching the 2022-23 national championship team. Mecailin Marshall led Tulane with 20 points.
UNDATED (AP) — Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed is Associated Press national college football player of the week. He threw for a career-high 439 yards and three touchdowns to lead the third-ranked Aggies’ comeback from a 27-point halftime deficit in a 31-30 victory over South Carolina. Reed threw for touchdowns of 27, 39 and 14 yards in the third quarter and led a 10-play, 99-yard drive for the winning touchdown early in the fourth. Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy was runner-up for the award for his performance against Mississippi State. He became the second player in program history to rush for 300 yards.
UNDATED (AP) — Purdue has reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll. The Boilermakers jumped over Houston, which spent just one week at the top. UConn, Arizona, and Duke also received No. 1 votes. UConn stayed at No. 3, while No. 4 Arizona and No. 5 Duke swapped spots. No. 6 Louisville made a big climb, moving up six spots. No. 8 Illinois also moved up, while Texas Tech and UCLA dropped.
