Gainesville and Mountain View won their appeals to move from Region 7-6A to 8-6A on Monday at the Georgia High School Association office in Thomaston.
The GHSA heard appeals from 18 schools on Monday requesting a move to a different region. Gainesville received eight yes votes and six no votes to move regions.
“Gainesville is excited to get back to our historical region of Region 8 for the next reclass cycle,” Gainesville athletics director Adam Lindsey said. “We know this move is what is best for all of Gainesville athletics, as it will decrease our time on the road and out of class. Go Big Red!”
Gainesville heads back to Region 8, a region they’ve been in for years, until the last reclass cycle, 2024-26, when they were placed in Region 7 with perennial powers Milton and Roswell.
Gainesville was initially placed back in Region 7 for the 2026-2028 cycle, along with Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Lanier, Milton, Mountain View, Riverwood, and Roswell. With the approval on Tuesday, Gainesville moves to Region 8 with Apalachee, Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central, Habersham Central, Jackson County, Loganville, Walnut Grove and Mountain View.
Lanier High School also appealed to move to Region 8 but was denied.
In Class 3A, Union County won its appeal to move from Region 8 to Region 7. Union County has played in Region 7-2A for the last two seasons. They’ll be housed with Coahulla Creek, LaFayette, Murray County, North Murray, Ringgold, Rockmart and Sonoraville. Before the appeal, Union County was in Region 8 with Barrow, Elbert County, Franklin County, Hart County, Hebron Christian, Lumpkin County and Stephens County.
