HELEN, Ga. — The warmth of Christmas past will glow again this December at Hardman Farm State Historic Site’s Victorian Christmas. Enjoy the holiday traditions of 1877 through flickering candlelight, horse-drawn wagon rides, and the sweet scent of sorghum cookies baking in the kitchen.
You can join in the fun from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekends December 5–6, 12–13, and 19–20. Visitors can explore the mansion’s decorated rooms, meet reenactors in period attire, and enjoy live music that fills the halls with classic carols.
A living portrait of 19th-century Christmas

Hardman Farm’s Victorian Christmas offers guests a rare chance to step into the world of Captain James Nichols and his wife, Kate, who hosted holiday gatherings at their home, once known as “West-End.” Reenactors portray the Nichols family, including daughter Anna Ruby — the namesake of nearby Anna Ruby Falls — and family matriarch Augusta Latimer, as they welcome visitors to the festivities.
“You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Christmas past,” said Sarah Summers, Hardman Farm’s assistant manager. “It’s a dose of Christmas magic, and a memorable event for the whole family.”
The mansion’s soft glow and seasonal décor create the feeling of being part of a family celebration from another century. Reenactors share stories about holiday customs, from handmade decorations to the songs that shaped Christmas traditions.
Sights, sounds, and flavors of the season
From the mansion’s grand parlor to the farmhouse kitchen, every corner of Hardman Farm tells a story. Bakers will prepare fresh cookies, adding to the holiday appeal. “What’s really fun is that the cookies are made with sorghum grown, pressed, and bottled right here at Hardman Farm,” said Summers. “They are a true Christmas treat!”

Outside, guests can take wagon rides down the historic Unicoi Turnpike. They can also gather around a fire for s’mores or stop by the carriage house to visit Santa Claus.
Local artisans and crafters will sell handmade holiday gifts inside the visitors center, rounding out the nostalgic experience with a touch of mountain tradition.
