This has been quite the year for Ben Griffin.
Sunday saw Griffin take home his third win of the season in Los Cabos at the World Wide Technology Championship. He posted a score of 29-under and lifted the trophy to celebrate at tournament’s end.
Funny enough, the win marked the first “trophy” of the season that Griffin won. This is a funny thing to say about a player who has won three times so far this year, but the word trophy is doing a lot of literal lifting.
“It’s funny, yeah, I’ve won — my last two events I won, but I didn’t get a trophy so this will be my first trophy I think that I actually get. I didn’t know this, but you have to pay for your trophy sometimes when you win. So I won a belt buckle at Zurich Classic, I won a belt buckle at the Charles Schwab. I also won a car at the Charles Schwab that actually burned in a tractor-trailer as it was getting delivered. I’ve had the worst luck honestly with awards when I’ve won, so I’m really hoping this makes its way back to home.”
“It’s been a — all the wires have gone through on Wednesday after, so that’s been amazing. I’m super grateful and blessed to play golf and obviously make as much as I do. This I think will be the first trophy that makes it back to my house, knock on wood.”
This is certainly a funny little quirk to the year that Griffin has had, but ultimately the wins are what matters most even if the trophies make them cooler.
Consider that Griffin has three career wins to date and that they all came this year. He is just the seventh player since 1983 to earn his first three career wins in the same season and the first to do so since Scottie Scheffler lit the world on fire in 2022. We all know what happened after that. What’s more is that Griffin actually joined Scottie and Rory McIlroy as the only players to win three times this overall season.
Congratulations to Ben Griffin. Hopefully the trophy makes it home!
