Banks County Sheriff warns residents of cryptocurrency scam

Authorities in Banks County are warning residents about cryptocurrency scams, in which fraudsters convince victims to invest in fake crypto opportunities.

The Banks County Sheriff’s Office said residents have reported losing money to these scams after sending funds to wallets that later disappeared.

“Scammers often pose as financial experts, online friends, or even ‘romantic interests’ who promise huge profits,” sheriffs’ office officials said on Facebook. “They may send professional-looking websites or apps that appear legitimate, but your money goes straight to them.”

Common red flags of these scams include promises of guaranteed or “risk-free” returns, pressure to act quickly or keep it secret, requests to pay in crypto or to move money to an unfamiliar wallet, or being told to download apps to “monitor investments” or to grant remote access to your device.

Officials said you can protect yourself by talking to your bank or a trusted financial advisor before investing, never sending crypto to someone you only know online, researching investment platforms, because real companies don’t guarantee profits and being cautious of social media investment tips and “celebrity” endorsements.
