Jon Elliott won Tuesday night’s election for the Gainesville City Council Ward 2 seat.

Elliott defeated Albert Reeves, winning 67% of the vote to Reeves’ 33%.

Elliott will fill the seat left vacant by Zach Thompson, who announced earlier in the year that he would step down from the post to run for Gainesville mayor. Thompson was the only candidate to run for the mayoral seat, winning that race uncontested Tuesday night.

Elliott will take the seat effective in January of 2026.

In a release issued at the launch of his campaign for city council, Elliott touted his 20 years of operating a local trucking company in the Gainesville poultry industry and recent real estate work, saying his goal would be to focus on responsible growth and improving infrastructure in the city.
