BUFORD, Ga. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) this weekend closed two dozen recreation areas around Lake Lanier due to the ongoing government shutdown. When the closures took effect Saturday afternoon, November 1, campers at the affected locations were required to leave.

In a press release, the Corps said most gates will be locked and ungated sites will be marked as closed. Minimal staffing will remain, although powerhouses and navigation locks will continue operating.

The Corps said a limited number of parks featuring water access points with standalone boat ramps will remain open, with restrooms and other facilities closed. Jointly managed campgrounds and day-use parks will remain open and operate normally.
