CORNELIA, Ga. — The Habersham County Chamber of Commerce has officially begun its search for a new president following the recent resignation of Ellie Van Doornum.
In a message to members, Chamber Board Chairman Tommy Thurmond announced Tuesday that the position is now open and applications are being accepted.
“We will diligently work through the interview and hiring process to identify the right candidate to serve the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce,” Thurmond said.
In a public statement, Thurmond thanked members for their patience and continued support during the transition.
Questions remain over resignations

Van Doornum, who served as Chamber president for several years, was widely recognized for expanding the organization’s partnerships and local business programs. Under her leadership, the Chamber strengthened its networking events, advocacy efforts, and community visibility. When she abruptly resigned on October 16, two other senior staffers, Alex Michelle and Anne Minium, also quit. None of them has publicly stated why they resigned. The Chamber Board has also declined to comment.
On October 22, Thurmond announced that the Chamber had appointed Shane Smith as interim Chamber coordinator.
According to the job posting, the Chamber president serves as the organization’s top executive and public representative. It states that the position calls for a “dynamic leader” who can “promote economic growth, support the local business community, and enhance the quality of life in Habersham County.”
Application process
According to the posting, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, résumé, and references to the Chamber Board chairman at tommy.thurmond@hemc.coop.
The Habersham County Chamber of Commerce describes itself as the leading voice of business in Habersham County, committed to supporting its members and enhancing economic vitality and quality of life.
