A Gainesville man has been charged with rape and false imprisonment after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in September at his home off Gaines Mill Road.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said Jayler Alexander Tovar, 31, was extradited from Webb County, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Tovar reportedly raped a 27-year-old female victim at around 1 and 2 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, at his home in the 3000 block of Rose Petal Street. Tovar also held the victim against her will for nearly one hour.

After the crime, the victim texted a friend who picked her up and drove her to a safe location. Tovar reportedly knew the victim before the crime.

Deputies were contacted at around 11 a.m. the same day, and investigators met with the victim. Arrest warrants were then obtained for Tovar.

While searching for the suspect, investigators discovered that he had fled the area and was traveling to the southern border.

Hall County authorities requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. On Oct. 10, U.S. Marshals and several other agencies found Tovar in Brownsville, TX.

The other agencies that helped arrest the suspect were the Brownsville Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Special Response Team, U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and U.S. Marshals Service Task Force, Brownsville, TX.

Tovar remains in the Hall County Jail without bond.
