Two brothers have been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty in the 2021 shooting death of a Gainesville man in Gwinnett County.
On Monday morning, October 27, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office issued a statement, saying that Deavian Jasiri-Teeir Netters, age 25, and Julian Patrick Netters, Jr., age 24, were both found guilty Friday evening of charges including felony murder and aggravated assault. Both were sentenced to life in prison plus five years.
The charges stemmed from a shooting on April 24, 2021, at a hookah lounge in Lawrenceville that left Shaquon Anthony McKensey, age 37, dead. The District Attorney’s Office said the brothers went to the lounge in the early morning hours.
“At some point, they encountered McKensey, who was visiting from Gainesville and was at the lounge celebrating a birthday with friends,” the statement from the DA’s office said.
The brothers were later seen on surveillance video leaving the lounge and waiting near a car in the parking lot.
“Jurors saw surveillance footage of Julian Netters, Deavian Netters, and one unidentified individual following McKensey’s grop after they left the lounge,” The DA’s office said. “At that point, the video showed Deavian Netters shooting the victim with an assault rifle, after which both Netters brothers and the unidentified individual fled the scene.”
The gun was reportedly later found at the Netters’ home, with Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives testifying in court that DNA evidence collected from the rifle matched to Deavian Netters.
“We hope that this outcome brings solace and healing to the family and loved ones of Shaquon McKensey,” Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “This was a violent incident that has no place in our community, nad we are grateful to the jury for this verdict.”
