A man has been taken into custody after driving his car into a security gate outside the White House, officials have said.
The incident occurred at around 10:37 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at a security gate at 17th and E streets near President Donald Trump‘s residence, the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement, sent to PEOPLE by a White House spokesperson.
“An individual drove his vehicle into the Secret Service vehicle gate located at 17th and E St, NW, DC . The individual was immediately arrested by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers,” the Secret Service spokesperson said.

“The vehicle was assessed by Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department and deemed safe. Additional information will be provided upon conclusion of the investigation,” the statement concluded.
In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the Secret Service said the individual was “immediately arrested and transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.”
“Charges for Unlawful Entry and Destruction of Government Property are currently pending,” the statement continued. “We appreciate the swift actions of our Uniformed Division officers and are grateful for the Metropolitan Police Department for their prompt response.”

The driver’s identity hasn’t been released and it’s not yet known whether the crash was intentional, or why the man had been approaching the White House at the time, the newspaper noted.
The White House has not been placed on lockdown, but the road leading to the gate is expected to remain closed until police remove the vehicle, the The New York Times stated, citing the Secret Service.

Tuesday’s incident marks the latest crash at the White House gates in recent years. Previous incidents include a driver crashing a rented U-Haul truck into a gate in May 2023, before later telling authorities that he’d been planning to kill then-President Joe Biden, and a man dying after crashing his car into a security barrier in May 2024. As previously reported by the Associated Press, Biden, 82, was away in Delaware at the time.
Incidents have occurred despite efforts to limit access to roads around the White House for vehicles and pedestrians since the 1990s, per the publication.
The U.S. Secret Service did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information. The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia directed any requests for comment to the Secret Service when contacted by PEOPLE.
