A Demorest man was arrested Friday night after authorities said he stole heavy machinery and took it on a “joy ride” near Cornelia.
Habersham County Sheriff’s Office officials said the Komatsu PC 290 LC excavator was stolen from a construction site at the Habersham County Animal Shelter site on Happy Tails Way off of Old Athens Highway near South Habersham Middle School. Danny Ross Robinson, age 66, allegedly entered the excavator, started it, and began driving it on Old Athens Highway.
Officials said the excavator was driven for about a half of a mile before stopping in a private driveway on Old Athens Highway. Sheriff’s deputies found Robinson there and arrested him.
The 30-ton machine reportedly damaged one mailbox, but did not hit any other structures or vehicles. The excavator itself was not damaged, and no injuries were reported.
Robinson faces charges of DUI and theft by taking of a motor vehicle.
