MVDs: Ole Miss Edition

You don’t battle back to take down a top five ranked opponent without a total team effort. But even then some players are bound to distinguish themselves. Those bold Bulldogs are your MVDs, the Most Valuable ‘Dawgs from Georgia’s 43-35 win over the Ole Miss Rebels.

Offense: Lawson Luckie and Gunner Stockton.  If you had told me that a Georgia tight end would catch three touchdown passes in a game this season I never would have believed you. If you had however assured me it would happen, I probably would’ve suspected it was Luckie. After showing flashes in 2024 Luckie bounced back from a sluggish start to the season with a career day, catching 5 passes for 43 yards and 75% of Gunner Stockton’s career-high 4 touchdown passes.

For his part Stockton completed 12 out of 12 passes for three touchdowns in the second half, one of the most clutch efforts by a quarterback in recent Bulldog history Stockton is playing with more and more confidence every week, and when he plays his kind of football game like he did this afternoon, he’s as good as anyone in the conference. He finished 26 of 31 passing for 289 yards and 4 touchdowns while adding 10 rushes for 59 yards and a score on the ground. We shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, but that’s a Heisman quality stat line against the #4 ranked team in the country.

Defense: Demelo Jones. To be clear, I could easily go with CJ Allen for yet another 10 tackle performance, but I could do that every week. He’s having a nearly Roquan Smith level season at Mike linebacker. But Jones played some solid run defense and had a pair of pass breakups, including a key one in the 4th quarter that may have been a game saver. In wjat’s been a tough season for Daylen Everette, Jones is pushing for more and more snaps at corner.

Special Teams: Peyton Woodring. Your special teams MVP certainly wasn’t Brett Thorson, who wasn’t called on for a single punt all day. Woodring however hit 4 of 4 extra points and 3 of 3 field goals including a 51 yarder and a late 42 yarder in which Gunner Stockton overcame a low snap and Woodring likewise was unphased. That’s a heckuva day.

Go ‘Dawgs!!!
