A Lakemont man was killed Thursday morning following a head-on collision on Cleveland Highway/U.S. 129 near Clarks Bridge Road.

A Gainesville woman is facing charges as a result of the crash.

38-year-old Angelica Marisol Vilchis-Cruz was driving a 2024 GMC Sierra south on Cleveland Highway and crossed into the northbound lane striking a 2018 Ford Explorer head-on.

An investigation determined Vilchis-Cruz fell asleep behind the wheel when the crash occurred at around 8 a.m.

The driver of the Explorer, 27-year-old Samantha Marie Motes of Clermont, and Vilchis-Cruz were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in Motes’ vehicle, 31-year-old DeWayne O’Neil Smith, had to be extricated and was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 9 a.m.

Vilchis-Cruz was transported to the Hall County Jail following treatment to her injuries and has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane. She remains in jail without bond.

Cleveland Highway was closed for roughly two hours for the accident investigation.
