Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on July 7, 2025, and hits theaters nationwide on July 11. The film, starring David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, marks the first live-action solo Superman movie since 2013’s Man of Steel and launches DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Early reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with critics calling the film “beautiful,” “hopeful,” and “the perfect superhero movie.” One review noted that the film feels like a departure from previous DC entries, offering a lighter tone while maintaining emotional depth and relevance. The film currently holds a 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

James Gunn’s commitment to filming in Georgia has not only brought a major production like Superman to the state but has also showcased why Georgia continues to be a top choice for filmmakers looking to combine quality, talent, and a supportive production environment. James Gunn, known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and now as co-CEO of DC Studios, made sure that Georgia played a starring role in the production of his new Superman film. As the first DC film he’s written and directed since transitioning from Marvel in 2022, Gunn wanted Superman to benefit from the state’s strong film infrastructure and talented crews.

Much of the filming took place at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, with additional scenes shot in Macon. Gunn told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that choosing Georgia was intentional, praising the local crews and the opportunities for growth he’s witnessed in the area: “I’ve seen people rise through the ranks. My secondary assistant director is now my primary assistant director. It’s a real great place to shoot.”

Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor in Superman, was once in the running to play the role of young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story before the part eventually went to Alden Ehrenreich.
