The filming industry in Georgia has slowed in recent years, with some productions relocating overseas to countries such as the United Kingdom. Marvel, for example, has chosen to film recent projects there. Netflix has now announced that a new Scooby-Doo live-action series will film in Georgia.

Series Overview

The eight-episode series will focus on the origins of the Scooby-Doo team, revisiting the first case that brought them together. The story is set during the final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, where Daphne and Shaggy encounter a Great Dane puppy linked to a possible supernatural murder. Velma, a local resident, and Freddy, a new arrival, join the investigation, which develops into a mystery involving all four characters. The series is expected to adopt a tone similar to Stranger Things, combining a supernatural atmosphere with a contemporary setting.

Origins of Camp Ruby-Spears

The camp setting in the new series, Camp Ruby-Spears, is named in recognition of Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the creators of the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? in 1969 and their company, Ruby-Spears Productions. Produced under Hanna-Barbera, the show introduced audiences to Shaggy Rogers, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Fred Jones, and their Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. The format—four teenagers and their dog solving supernatural mysteries—quickly became a success. Over the decades, the franchise has expanded to 14 television series and more than 45 films. New projects, including Netflix’s live-action series and the recently announced animated series Go-Go Mystery Machine, continue to extend the Scooby-Doo legacy.

Characters and Casting

All of the main characters—Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby—will be included in the series. Casting information indicates that the production is seeking younger actors between the ages of 14 and 17 for the roles. This approach differs from the 2002 Scooby-Doo film written by Georgia resident, James Gunn, which featured actors in their 20s and 30s, but is more consistent with the animated series, where the characters are typically portrayed as older teenagers.

Production Details

The series is being developed by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg through their company Midnight Radio. Executive producers include Appelbaum, Rosenberg, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman.

The project was initially scheduled to begin filming in Georgia in Fall 2025, though revised listings suggest production may not start until early 2026. Filming schedules remain subject to change.

Background casting nor the studio that will serve as home-base has not been announced.

Industry Partnerships

The show is a collaboration between Netflix, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television. It is part of Berlanti Productions’ overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer Greg Berlanti has previously collaborated with actor Mark Hamill on The Flash. Hamill, known for his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, voiced the character Trickster in Berlanti’s series.

Franchise Context

Scooby-Doo has been part of popular culture for over 50 years, with multiple animated series, three theatrical films, and additional adaptations. This series will mark the first live-action television adaptation of the franchise. Netflix has previously released live-action adaptations of other franchises, including One Piece, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Wednesday.
