9-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized with Cracked Spine and Liver Lacerations After Car Crashes into Her Bedroom

A 9-year-old girl is recovering after she was seriously injured by a car that plowed through her bedroom window in Michigan while she slept.

Laila Breitshtrus was in bed at her home in Center Line around 3 a.m. local time on Monday, Oct. 13, when the crash occurred, ABC affiliate WXYZ and NBC affiliate WDIV reported.

The girl was launched from her bed, through a window and into the yard, according to the reports. She was later found under a pile of debris.

As a result of the crash, Laila sustained three spinal injuries, a fractured nose and a lacerated liver, according to Taylor Brashaw, who organized a GoFundMe for the girl and her family following the crash.

Family said Laila sustained cracks in her spine, according to WXYZ-TV. She also had several cuts and bruises.

Laila’s family is thankful she survived the crash. She was last listed in stable condition, according to the Macomb Daily.

“We’re just hopeful as of right now,” said her mom, Rachael Wright, WXYZ reported.

Laila is expected to undergo “extensive therapy” following the crash, according to Bradshaw, who Macomb Daily identified as Laila’s aunt.

“We are grateful that she is alive, but her recovery journey is far from over,” the aunt wrote in the description of the online fundraiser.

Police said the 20-year-old woman who was driving the car that hit the home allegedly attempted to flee the scene, but was ultimately chased down, according to WXYZ-TV and WDIV-TV.

The driver reportedly is facing multiple charges in connection with the crash and was booked into the Macomb County Jail.

Center Line police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
