A 6-year-old girl died after she was struck by a vehicle when she and her family were crossing the street on their way to school earlier this week, according to Florida authorities.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies responded on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 4, to a call about a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Mohr Road and Sheldon Road in Tampa.

Upon arrival, responders found a woman and her two children with injuries, the sheriff’s office said. The girl was soon pronounced dead.

Authorities identified the 6-year-old victim as Rosangela Segundo-Osorio, the Tampa Bay Times and NBC affiliate WFLA reported, and her injured mother and brother as Catalina Osorio-Jimenez and Peter Segundo-Osorio, respectively.

Rosangela attended Faith Outreach Academy in Tampa, per WFLA. The school shared a GoFundMe to help the girl’s family on Facebook and wrote in a post: “Faith Outreach is saddened by Rose’s passing. Our hearts and prayers are with her family. But we rejoice in knowing ‘to be absent from the body and to be present with The Lord.’ ”

Rosangela’s mother and brother were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver was also transported for medical treatment.

Authorities said that the family was properly using a crosswalk when the driver of a car that was traveling eastbound on Mohr Road made a right turn on Sheldon Road and struck them.

The sheriff’s office identified the driver as Isain Ledesma, 77, who had a green light. But as Undersheriff Thomas St. John said at a news conference, “The pedestrians always have the right of way. End of story.”

The sheriff’s office also said that Ledesma was cited for a violation of the right of way with death.

“An ordinary walk to school turned into an unimaginable tragedy for a family who should have simply been starting their day together,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in d statement.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder that every second behind the wheel carries responsibility, especially when children are walking to school,” he said. “Slow down and stay alert, so no other family endures this kind of pain.”
