A 6-year-old child is among those recovering after a boat capsized in Tomales Bay, California.

In a post shared on Facebook on Tuesday, Oct. 21, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said they had responded to reports of an “overturned boat in rough ocean conditions near Tomales Point.”

Authorities said they found several people in the water and after an “extensive search” found two passengers who had made it to a remote beach and were “suffering from cold-water exposure.”

The sheriff’s went on to say that while rescuing the two passengers on the beach they learned that three other victims — including a 6-year-old child — had been rescued by “heroic bystanders” who had launched their own boat after hearing about the incident.

Five people in total had entered the water and all rescued, police confirmed. The child and two adults were airlifted to local hospitals.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the fishing boat was capsized by a large wave.

The sheriff’s office shared a video of the rescue operation on the Facebook page showing some of the passengers being winched to safety using a rope dangling from the helicopter.

The department received the alert just before 12 p.m. local time, sheriff’s office spokesperson Emily Fuller told SFGATE.

“That area of the mouth is extremely dangerous and we have had boats capsize in that area before,” she told the outlet.

The child and two other passengers were rescued by father and son Willy and Cameron Vogler, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“We saw another big, head-high wave coming and we probably should have turned around, but once we saw people we went for it,” Willy, who runs nearby private campground Lawson’s Landing, told the outlet.

According to Willy, the child had been trapped under the capsized boat before her father rescued her.

“That’s my worst nightmare,” Willy told the outlet. “You have fishhooks and ropes and who knows what else hanging under there that you can get tangled up in.”

The Voglers, both fishermen, then took the three individuals to Dillon Beach, where emergency responders were waiting for them.

“We commend the outstanding teamwork among all responding agencies and the courageous bystanders whose quick actions helped save lives that day,” the sheriff’s office concluded their post.
