The prized Oma bluefin was won by Kiyoshi Kimura of Kiyomura Corp, widely known as the “Tuna King” and owner of the popular Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain. A well-known figure in the New Year’s Tuna Auction world, Mr Kimura had broken his own 2019 record purchase of 334 million yen, about $3.1 million USD at the time, for a 612-pound Oma Pacific bluefin Tuna. Considered some of the best bluefin tuna in the world, the prized line-caught Oma tunas, also known as “black diamonds”, are at their peak season during the winter. Caught in the north of Japan, right below Hokkaido, these tuna are prized for their balanced fat content and clean flavor. Which these tuna get from their diet of squid and fatty baitfish in the cold, nutrient-rich Tsugaru Strait.
