Two people have died and five others have been hospitalized following a devastating fire in Los Angeles.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, at around 11:10 p.m. local time, firefighters responded to reports of a structural fire in the 10900 block of North Scoville Avenue in the Sunland neighborhood, according to a press release issued by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

Upon arrival, firefighters saw a one-story, single-family home engulfed in flames and immediately initiated an “aggressive interior attack while conducting a search for victims.” Firefighters did not report hearing any alarms during the rescue, per the LAFD, and it remains unclear whether the home — built in 1948 — was equipped with working smoke alarms.

Of the eight total victims, five were transported to the hospital with injuries of various degrees of severity. Another patient declined transportation, and the remaining two victims were “tragically beyond medical assistance and determined deceased at the scene,” the LAFD said.

One of the victims was an 87-year-old man, who was found outside the 1,359-square-foot home with critical burn injuries, per the LAFD. After first responders provided immediate medical care, the elderly man was transported to the hospital.

Four more adults, who were waiting outside the home when help arrived, sustained “varying degrees of smoke inhalation” before being transported for treatment, according to the LAFD.

A total of 36 firefighters, operating under the command of Battalion Chief Scott Hilton, extinguished the fire within 30 minutes. Cause of death for the two deceased victims will be determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the LAFD said.
