A Stephens County High School student is facing felony charges after he attempted to enter the school with a loaded firearm Monday.
A release from the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office said the school’s weapon detection system immediately detected the pistol inside the 16-year-old student’s backpack at the beginning of the school day. School Resource Officers took the student into custody without incident.
SCSO said after further investigation, officers discovered that the firearm was stolen and Stephens County Sheriff’s Office investigators responded to further investigate the situation.
The student is being charged with theft By Receiving Stolen Property, Carrying Weapons on School Property and Possession of Handgun by a Person Under the Age of 18 Years. SCSO said additional charges may be pending upon further investigation. The student was taken to a nearby Regional Youth Detention Center.
“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Incidents like this reinforce the importance of our safety measures- especially our weapons detection system- which worked exactly as intended this morning,” Dr. Connie Franklin, Stephens County Schools Superintendent, said in a release .
The school system encouraged families to continue having conversations with their students about the importance of reporting concerns and ensuring that no prohibited items are brought onto campus.
