MT. AIRY — The Mt. Airy Town Council unanimously approved the hiring of James Kimsey as the city’s new public works director Tuesday night, bringing back a former department head who previously held the position from 2017 to 2019.
Kimsey replaces former Public Works Director Daniel Johnson, who resigned earlier this year to accept another professional opportunity. Johnson remained in the role until a replacement was selected to maintain continuity in operations.
In April, the council formally accepted Johnson’s resignation following an executive session. Mayor Adam Tullis said at the time that Johnson had served the town well.
“Daniel has done a great job for Mt. Airy, and we wish him well in his next role,” Tullis said.
Kimsey, who has since spent time running his own business, said he decided to return after turning that company over to his son.
“I ventured out on my own, started a company, handed over to my son. So now I’m coming back,” Kimsey told Now Georgia following the meeting.
Asked about his priorities in returning to the role, Kimsey said his focus is straightforward.
“Just to do what needs to be done, and what Council is asking, get the job done,” he said.
His appointment was approved unanimously by the council.
