Gville area scholarship winner; NGMC nurses recognized; Splish, splash; Bird flu outbreak

*More than $50,000 in scholarship funding and full toolkits were awarded to 39 recipients of the 2026 Women’s Industry Network (WIN) Student Scholarship Awards. The winners were selected from more than 100 applicants and include Rachel Santafemia. Santafemia is a student at Clarkesville’s North Georgia Technical College.

*Tamika Johnson, a charge nurse with the medical oncology unit at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville, was recently recognized by the AJC as a Nurse Excellence Award winner. Johnson is one of two nurses at NGMC Gainesville to receive a Nurse Excellence Award. The other is Heather McNeal, a nurse manager of the surgical trauma intensive care unit.

*You might notice the water running at Hall County Parks & Leisure Services splash pads at Laurel and Butler parks already. But that’s not a sign of an early opening. What it means is that workers are getting them ready for the summer season. Both will open May 23 at 10:00.

*France has reported outbreaks of bird flu on two farms, just days after the country eased restrictions linked to the disease. It was detected in chickens and vaccinated ducks, causing the death of 270 birds out of a total 5,062, according to French authorities. The remaining birds were subsequently destroyed as a precaution.
