Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is scheduled to survey the damage left behind from South Georgia wildfires today. The governor will hold a press conference at 1:30 in Waycross, Georgia. The governor’s trip comes after he declared a State of Emergency for 91 counties in the lower half of the state including Muscogee and Harris.

The Georgia Forestry Commission responded to 34 new wildfires, burning 75k acres statewide on Thursday. That figure does not include the Pineland Rd Fire, now estimated at 29,606 acres and 10% contained or the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County, now estimated at 4,438 acres and 15% contained.

With ongoing drought conditions and no significant rainfall in sight, wildfire activity remains elevated across Georgia. Officials warn if you do not need to be in or near an active fire area, please stay out. Also, the Georgia State Forester said no drones — flying drones near wildfires is illegal and can ground firefighting aircraft.
