CLARKESVILLE — The City of Clarkesville recognized two local students during its May 4 City Council meeting as part of the Georgia Municipal Association’s Georgia Cities Week coloring contest, an annual statewide program designed to engage youth in learning about local government.

William Schier won in the 3–5 age group, and Mellie Wilbanks was selected as the winner in the 6–9 age group. Each received a framed certificate and a gift card to Scoops on the downtown square.

The coloring contest is part of Georgia Cities Week, a statewide initiative organized by the Georgia Municipal Association that encourages cities to promote civic education and community engagement. Participating cities typically provide children with themed coloring pages focused on local government, city services or community identity. Entries are then collected locally and winners are selected by each city.

The program is used across Georgia as a way to help younger residents better understand the role of city government while also encouraging creativity and civic pride. Many cities recognize winners during council meetings and may display artwork in public buildings or city offices.

Mayor Franklin Brown said the contest helps children connect with their community in a meaningful way.

“It’s a wonderful way for our community’s youth to express how they see and experience our city,” Brown said. “We were truly impressed by the interest. We chose two age groups today, and we recognize the two outstanding winners representing the very best of their age group. Their artwork stood out.”

He added that the submissions offered a unique perspective on the community.

“Your creativity, imagination and talent have not gone unnoticed,” Brown said. “You’ve given us all a fresh perspective on what makes our city special. On behalf of the City of Clarkesville, I’m proud to congratulate both of you.”

The Georgia Cities Week program is part of broader outreach efforts by municipalities across the state to highlight local services, public employees and community involvement through educational activities and events.
