Clarkesville council to review drought update, employee assistance program at Monday work session

CLARKESVILLE — City leaders will take up a range of items Monday, including a drought update, a proposed employee assistance program and ongoing grant efforts, during a Clarkesville City Council work session.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. April 27 at City Hall.

Among the key items on the agenda is an update on drought conditions and the state’s response framework. Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division monitors indicators such as rainfall, stream flow, groundwater and reservoir levels to determine whether drought restrictions are necessary.

If conditions worsen, the state can implement escalating response levels, including limits on outdoor watering and additional conservation measures.

Council members are also expected to discuss participation in the Georgia Municipal Employees Benefit System Employee Assistance Program. The program would provide confidential counseling, legal and financial consultations, and other support services to employees and first responders and their families at a monthly cost of about $1.85 per participant.

In addition, the council will receive its monthly grants update. City officials are awaiting a decision on a Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank application tied to a planned restoration of the Clarkesville Square, a project that includes new green space and more than $1.6 million in requested funding.

The city has also applied for a Georgia Council for the Arts grant that would support local art initiatives and connect Clarkesville to a statewide creative network, with an announcement expected in early May.

Other discussion items include the city’s bicentennial trailer and general updates under unfinished business.

The agenda also includes time for public comment and a possible executive session to discuss real estate matters, as allowed under state law.

No formal votes are expected during the work session, but discussions could shape items brought forward for action at a future regular meeting.
