CLEVELAND, Ga. — A Cleveland man wanted for murder in Franklin County was arrested Tuesday morning following a brief standoff at a Hood Street residence, according to police.

The incident began around 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, when Cleveland police officers were conducting a follow-up investigation into an earlier assault reported at the home.

During the investigation, officers learned the assault suspect, identified as 55-year-old Julius Scott Dorsey of Cleveland, was inside the residence hiding in a rear bedroom and refusing to come out.

Police said Dorsey was also wanted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding murder warrant.

Believing Dorsey could be armed, officers evacuated the other occupants from the home and requested assistance from the White County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team along with additional officers from neighboring agencies.

After a brief standoff, Dorsey exited the residence unarmed and surrendered to officers without incident, Cleveland Police Chief Jeff Shoemaker said.

He was taken into custody and transported to the White County Sheriff’s Office.

Agents from the GBI’s Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, the Helen Police Department, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the operation.

Chief Shoemaker said he and his department “are grateful for the relationships that we have with the several law enforcement agencies that were involved today.”

Shoemaker also told Now Georgia he is relieved by the outcome.

“We are pleased to have brought the suspect into custody without incident. Our priority was resolving this safely for the residents, our officers, and the suspect.”
