A man was arrested last month after authorities said he stole people’s identities to open Verizon accounts in Forsyth and Gwinnett counties.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Donald Carroll was arrested and transferred from DeKalb County custody to Forsyth County on Nov. 21 on charges including felony theft by taking and identity fraud. Carroll was reportedly employed at Verizon stores in both Forsyth and Gwinnett counties starting in July of this year under a false name.

“After a few months, Verizon contacted the store to inform them they were receiving calls from non-Verizon customers saying their identities were being used to open Verizon accounts and bill phones and other devices (such as tablets) to those accounts,” the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said.

Verizon’s investigation led to the fraudulent name Carroll was employed under. Carroll had reportedly been able to steal a total of $12,000 worth of Verizon merchandise.

“As FCSO deputies were investigating the case, Gwinnett County arrested Donald for their charges,” the sheriff’s office said. “On November 18…warrants were obtained in Forsyth County.”

Carroll is currently being held in the Forsyth County Jail on just over $100,000 bond.
